The Portland Press Herald Toy Fund has been supporting families by making winters happier for children since 1949! The Toy Fund used to be known as the Bruce Roberts Toy Fund, a reference to the pen name of the Portland Evening Express editor who started the program in 1949. The Fund continues the original mission as conceived then. We supply toys to children in every community in the five counties serviced by the fund – York, Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, and Knox. The money received in donations goes to purchase toys. Thousands of children annually benefit from the toys we supply. With the continued struggles that many families face, the number of children in need doesn’t diminish. We provide gifts for children from birth to age 18 that are age appropriate and safe.
The Portland Press Herald Toy Fund works to make holidays happy for thousands of children in Maine. Although our major focus for receiving donations remains November and December, we do accept donations throughout the year. The easiest way to donate is by clicking here. You can also send a check to Press Herald Toy Fund PO Box 7310, Portland, ME 04112.
Lists of donors with dedications will be posted during late November and December, 2014.
Please consider a donation at any time through the year. As a donor, you are responsible for thousands of smiles! Thank you!
The Press Herald Toy Fund is a non-profit corporation that was established in 1949 as a newspaper-run charity to assure that all Maine children received toys during the holiday season. Originated by reporter Robert Beith and the then Welfare Director of Portland, Matt Barron, it has been helping thousands of families since its origin. Six decades later, it has grown into a powerful community asset with a strong reputation for helping those in need in five counties: York, Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Knox.
Each year, at least 100 volunteers work to ensure that the children are served. Each volunteer has a story to tell as to why they are committed to the endeavor. The donors also have stories to tell – many speak of receiving toys from the fund when they were young, other donors let us know that they have requested assistance in the past or feel grateful for their own blessings.
From Thanksgiving to Christmas, The Portland Press Herald Toy Fund solicits cash donations from readers. These donations are used to purchase new, safe, and age appropriate gifts for children. Although originally conceived as a Christmas toy fund, the mission of the fund was broadened years ago to include all faiths. The spirit of giving and sharing originated under “Bruce Roberts” remains intact.
The Toy Fund accepts applications from clients throughout York, Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Knox counties. The best way to get an application is to download it from our website: https://pressheraldtoyfund.org/app
You might also receive an application from a Group leader – social service providers, schools and community centers. All clients should mail their completely filled out applications to Press Herald Toy Fund PO Box 7310 Portland, ME 04112. During December, our warehouse opens for Individual Client Pick Up. After the client sends in an application and after we process it, the client receives a letter giving a date for Pick Up, what identification to bring and how to get to our warehouse to pick up the gifts. That is when the holiday magic begins in homes throughout Maine!
